In 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the hearing of Roe vs Wade, a landmark case that protected citizens' rights to an abortion. The reasons a woman may undertake this procedure are many, varied, and above all, personal. However, in 2022 the Supreme Court decided in the case of Dobbs vs Jackson Women's Health Organization that this right is not guaranteed via the Constitution, and returned the power to regulate any aspect of abortions to federal and state legislatures.
As of this writing, abortion is now heavily restricted in 17 states, notably in Texas where there are no restrictions for rape, incest, nor fatal fetal abnormality. It is punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a civil penalty of at least $100,000.
